End near for Reno eatery

August 11, 2002 — 8:15 a.m.
RENO (AP) — One of Reno's most popular restaurants from the 1950s to the 1980s is facing a date with the wrecking ball.

The dilapidated Bundox along the Truckee River in downtown Reno will be demolished beginning as early as this week.

The property has been the site of a series of failed development proposals and an obstacle to downtown redevelopment east of Virginia Street.

"This is one we've wanted to see go for a really long time," said Donna Kristaponis, assistant city manager. "This is good news."

The new owner of the property, a private investment partnership called Gonzo Triangle Properties, has no specific plans for the site.

The Bundox opened in 1957 and closed in 1989, later becoming a haven for vagrants.

Despite the Bundox's prominent role in Reno's dining scene, no vocal opposition to its razing has surfaced.
